National Safe Boating Week |
| Each year approximately
700 people die in boating-related accidents. Nine out of ten victims
were not wearing a life jacket. Lee county is no exception to that
grisly statistic. In an effort to combat these alarming facts, Coast
Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 9-10 joins the U.S. Coast Guard, and state
and national boating associations in a campaign designed to reach
more than 35,000 boaters around the county and communicate the
message: “Wear Your Life Jacket! Boat Smart From The Start”. “Safe boating is no accident. Our primary emphasis is to impart to the boating public the basic knowledge for the safe operation of a boat,” said Mr. Tom Bamford, Past Flotilla Commander, Flotilla 9-10. The Coast Guard Auxiliary and our partners are committed to a campaign that stresses the importance of wearing life jackets and smart boating essential parts of any day on the water. During the National Safe Boating Week, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, among other groups, organize local exhibits, and provide special programs on safe boating. Although safe boating is a year-round crusade that counts on grassroots activities and the support of many volunteers, lots of emphasis is put on the Safe Boating Week throughout the country to help spread the message: “Safe boating is no accident.” The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers programs and vessel checks to accomplish the national goal. This campaign focuses on the importance of wearing a life jacket, but also reminds boaters about the fundamentals of safe boating. |
